Xbox One continues without an exclusive title

God of War, Uncharted and The Last of Us are among the most acclaimed video games of recent years – and all have one thing in common: they were all released exclusively for the Sony PlayStation 4 console. This means that the gaming competition from Nintendo and Microsoft in particular is looking into the tubes with these titles.

Games like these exclusive titles are cited by many experts as one of the main reasons for the consistently good sales figures of the PS4. Nintendo has also always been known for its exclusive titles such as Mario, Zelda and Smash Bros. Only Microsoft relies for the most part on a different strategy for its Xbox consoles.

Despite statements to the contrary by CEO Phil Spencer from last year, nothing seems to change about this approach this year for the time being. The racing game Forza Horizon 4 in 2018 is exactly one exclusive title for Microsoft consoles.
One obviously does not see a problem in the Xbox division of Microsoft here.

In an interview with Games Industry, Aaron Greenberg, head of marketing at Xbox, stresses that the lack of exclusive titles can easily be avoided by “technical superiority” and cooperation with publishers.

No exclusive Xbox games: Microsoft sees little danger

In his opinion, there will be “more AAA titles on the market this year, especially at Christmas time, than ever before in such a short period of time”. However, the “AAA titles” Greenberg addresses will all be non-Xbox exclusive except for Forza Horizon.

It is unclear whether the “technical superiority” of the Microsoft console is ultimately sufficient to persuade customers to buy Xbox One. For most gamblers, however, a strong offer of (exclusive) games is likely to be far more of a buying argument than a marginally better presentation with particularly chic graphics. Greenberg also dedicates part of the interview to a new service that Microsoft wants to bring to the market: the Xbox Game Pass. This allows access to a large selection of Xbox games for a monthly fee of 9.99 euros.
